How to label moving boxes

The goal of a label is simple: anyone can put the box in the right room, and you can find anything without opening ten boxes. This system takes a few seconds per box.

1. Decide your rooms and colors first

List the rooms in your new home and give each one a color. Garage, storage and “Donate” count as rooms too. Write it down once, or let Boxdex keep the list and colors for you.

2. Number every box

Use one running number for the whole move: 1, 2, 3… A number is quicker to find on a stacked pile than a word, and it ties the box to your inventory list.

3. Write the contents down while the box is open

Keep it short. You’re writing for future-you searching for one item, not for an auditor. “Router, HDMI cables, remote” is perfect.

4. Add handling marks

Fragile, Heavy, This side up. Then mark a few boxes “Open first” with what you need on night one: sheets, towels, toilet paper, chargers, medications, basic tools, coffee.

5. Label two sides

One label on top and one on a side. Boxes get stacked, and the top is often hidden.

6. Put signs on the doors at the new place

A big colored sign on each door means helpers can match boxes to rooms without asking. Boxdex prints these for free.

7. Check boxes off on moving day

Count boxes onto the truck and off again. If a number is missing, you’ll know before the truck leaves. Boxdex Pro does this with one tap per box.
